What is IPL laser hair removal?

IPL is a non-invasive treatment that uses intense pulsed light for a permanent reduction and long-term hair removal. Permanent IPL laser hair removal treatments are specially designed to safely eliminate undesired hair from all areas of the body.

Because the IPL light affects hair follicles only when they are in the growth phase, more than one laser hair removal treatment is necessary to destroy hair follicles that enter the growth phase next.

During your laser hair removal consultation with you Radiance professional, you will be advised as to the approximate number of treatments necessary for optimum results.

The Procedure

A treatment consists of passing the Intense Pulse Light wand over your skin. As the IPL’s wide beam of light penetrates your skin, it is absorbed by the melanin or pigment in the hair follicles.

The heat generated by the light destroys the follicle causing the hair to fall out. Unfortunately, Laser Hair Removal does not work on blond or gray hair because the laser beam has no target color that can be isolated.

Frequently Asked Questions

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses intense light pulses to remove unwanted hair by targeting the hair follicles.

IPL uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths, while traditional laser hair removal uses a single, focused wavelength of light. IPL is generally more versatile and can treat a wider range of hair colors and skin types.

The sensation is often described as a warm pinch or a rubber band snapping against the skin. Discomfort is typically minimal, and cooling systems or numbing creams can be used to enhance comfort.

Typically, 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are needed for optimal results, but this can vary depending on the individual’s hair type, color, and the area being treated.

IPL can be used to remove hair from almost any part of the body, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, chest, and back.

Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, and itching.

IPL is most effective on individuals with light to medium skin tones and dark hair. Advances in technology have made it safer for darker skin tones, but it’s important to consult with a qualified practitioner to assess suitability.

Results can vary, but many individuals experience long-term hair reduction after completing a full treatment course. Maintenance sessions may be required for sustained results.

There is typically no downtime, and most people can return to their normal activities immediately. It’s important to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen on the treated area.

Avoid tanning, waxing, or plucking the area for several weeks before treatment. Shave the area 24 to 48 hours before your session. Follow any additional pre-treatment instructions provided by your practitioner.
